It’s six months since I became President of NZSBA – and I wanted to share some reflections on the role, and on what makes NZSBA a vibrant and growing organisation.

Harvard Business Review 2016 summary by Frank Olsson
Our New President, Frank Olsson, has a new website where he shares his thoughts on Humanising Business and regularly writing notes on the Harvard Business Review.
Here is a brief summary of the whole 2016 year in HBR.
A New Social Enterprise in our Midst
Committee member Claire Conza, who has been behind our marketing & comms for over 3 years, has been busy re-inventing herself and her purpose in life and business with a new way of doing business - Social Enterprise that is 100% purpose driven and places just as much importance on people & planet as profit. We are proud of her taking the win in the Idealog Creative Kickstart Competition on her birthday in August - check out the little video here.
Nordic Networking Unplugged + AGM at Cult
We had another AGM 11th August 2016, this being AGM number 26 , with good attendance. We were hosted by Paul Rinke-Mailman in Cult Design's premises at The Strand in Parnell.
Volvo to treat 40 Kiwis to the Volvo Experience in Sweden
Volvo ran a Sweden promotion in the first quarter of this year. They offered customers a free trip to Sweden for any new Volvo purchased between the 1st January and 31st March. This was a successful campaign and they are sending approximately 40 people over to Sweden. These customers will experience a tour of the museum, factory and brand experience centre, all covered by Volvo Car New Zealand!
Notes on Investment Criteria
Notes by Frank Olsson - "Early January I read an interesting book called Charlie Munger, the complete investor by Tren Griffin. I think the book makes a lot of sense and of course the proof of the formula is in the tremendous successes experienced by Warren Buffett, Charlie Munger and all the shareholders of Berkshire Hathaway. Investment success will normally start out with a plan which you try to stick to. For this to be possible the plan needs to be rather general and simple so it can allow changes in the market place to harmonise with the long term plan. The plan should be more philosophical than sophisticated, i.e. take into account the broader parameters of investment policy."

HBR and it's Contribution to Society by Frank Olsson
I have been a keen reader of Harvard Business Review over many years and rate it highly. I find the magazine is trying hard in its choice of articles to act responsibly and contribute to build a better approach to business, and to moderate run-away capitalism.
Christmas Party - Celebrating 25 years Norwegian Style
We had a lot to live up to after an incredible Christmas Party in 2014, so of course we stepped it up a notch for 2015 to celebrate our 25th Anniversary! Our Authentic Nordic Christmas Party, Norwegian Style was be held on the roof-top of Next Generation Health & Lifestyle Club in Parnell on Thursday 3 December. The evening was a great success due to the joy and participation of all those present including the honorary consuls of Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden.
Scandinavian Christmas Market
The magical allure of a Scandinavian Christmas culture was captured by the Scandinavian Christmas Market again held at Danish House in Penrose and co-hosted by The Danish Society and the NZ Scandinavia Business Assn (NZSBA) was the drawcard that drew thousands of Aucklanders out on one of the busiest Sundays of 2015.

Harvard Business Review Notes by Frank Olsson
The October 2015 HBR issue comes with the cover message: The new rules for competition; be paranoid, disrupt yourself; go to war for talent. The third point could be changed to ‘finding, recruiting and retaining the best talent’ – or ‘intensify the quest for talent.’ (I think we should avoid war and war analogies - the war on terrorism, the war on drugs and the war on poverty have not been successful. Business is not about war – it is about service and competition – competition originating from Latin competere – to seek together). Please find below a few notes from this issue.
New Company Member - Line's Knækbrød
"It all started in 2011 when my parents came to visit from Denmark and brought this amazing recipe with them. I remember eating the Swedish Knækbrød as a child. With this recipe, it was love at first bite and we spent the rest of the summer & the following year baking and perfecting the recipe.

NZSBA AGM 2015
Intro from James's Presidents report: The quarter century milestone is quite an achievement and it’s an honour to be here and involved. The NZSBA began life back in 1990 as a Swedish Business Association by Hans and Pat Björkland, and later changed to capture the entire Nordic region. Hans sadly passed away in October 2012 but the spirit of what he wanted to achieve is alive and well here at the NZSBA.

President's Brief July 2015
In June we held our second Nordic Networking event hosted by ABB at their premises in Grafton, Auckland.
It’s a privilege to have such icons as members - companies steeped in history that play such a pivotal roll in keeping the world functioning. This of course allows for some fascinating insights imparted by the NZ MD’s. The Nordic Networking events also give members a great opportunity to get together and network.
Events coming up include the AGM on 18th August, the NZSBA Business Forum on 21st September with a fantastic line-up of speakers, the Scandinavian Christmas Market on 1 November - at which we will again have a presence - and the Christmas Function early December.
Harvard Business Review Notes by Frank Olsson
This issue is about HR – “It’s time to blow up HR and build something new. Here’s how!” Some interesting observations even if I feel quite hesitant to the idea of strong central HR as I believe that HR should be the main focus of all senior managers. Developing and maximising the energy and competency within your team must be a direct responsibility of all managers and any suggesting that you can be a manager without such focus and skills is mistaken. The debate will no doubt continue. Please find below a few notes from this issue.
Volvo XC90 Launch
Our members were kindly invited to the launch of the new VOLVO XC90, and those that made it along were delighted. The new VOLVO showroom in Greenlane is stunning and testament to the rapidly increasing position VOLVO has in the luxury vehicle segment - the fastest growing luxury brand in the world. And like the new XC90, the showroom exudes Swedish design - minimalist, chic and downright cool.
